-
Park Description:
- During the 1980s a group of homeowners in Lake Claire banded together to purchase approximately 7 acres of land. The owners graciously allow residents of the Lake Claire neighborhood to use this land, known as the Lake Claire Community Land Trust. Neighborhood residents use the Land Trust for everything from Easter egg hunts to a regular Drum Circle. There are also a couple of trees used by a group called "Tree Climbers International."
This is a wonderfully eccentric space. [See a site plan.] It includes an "emu, goat, & chicken overlook"; a fruit orchard; a sweat lodge; and compost toilets. It's certainly not where you'd want to host a corporate softball game, but it's a great amenity for families living in this part of Lake Claire.
Because it is private property, please be especially mindful of the rules and tread lightly. Remember, the owners are under no obligation to make the Land Trust available to the larger community.
-
Amenities:
- Fire pit/drum circle (middle photo, right); gazebo; covered stage; large sand area for kids; picnic area; cook shed; compost toilets; sweat lodge; community bulletin board
-
Accessibility:
- This site would be very challenging to anyone with motor disabilities. The pathways are dirt or loose surfacing and there is considerable topographic variation.
-
Aesthetics:
- The Land Trust is a quirky and wonderful hodge-podge of New Age and Old Hippie. There are hand painted signs pointing the way to the drum circle, the compost toilets, and "the exact center of the known universe." A giant pile of wood chips greets visitors as they enter the site. A very handsome stage and gazebo give the upper area some structure, and there are gardens as well as naturalistic areas throughout.
-
Pets:
- This is private property. You should find out about dog policy from the owners. Keep in mind, this area is used for gardening and children's play area. There are also domesticated animals on the site (including chickens). Under no circumstances should you allow a dog to run unleashed.
